What do you want to be when you grow up? I’m almost 50 and I still don’t know. Maybe I just haven’t grown up. Chatting to a teenager this evening who’s trying to decide what to do next. Probably A-Levels. But then what? The pressure is on – from well meaning adults – asking, ‘What do you want to do?’ Meaning, what job have you got in mind? Or, what degree do you want to do? Or, what apprenticeship have you looked into? A lot of people change jobs and careers over their life times. People retrain, use their transferable skills, try something new, take an opportunity that comes their way. It’s not that no one know what they want to be when they grow up. Or that no one sticks with a career for their whole life. But I’ve started asking more like – what are you enjoying at the moment? Is there anything you’d like to try right now? It doesn’t mean you can avoid the tricky questions when it comes to decisions on A-Levels or jobs or training or volunteering or whatever comes next. But it adds some variety and creativity into the conversation.
