Lived Experience…and the Feels

What does it feel like? I’m currently working in a homelessness team – collaborating with people to do research into homelessness and ensuring it is embedded in practice. Looking from the outside (I’ve never experienced homelessness), I can listen and learn and try to understand what it is like to be in a certain position e.g. excluded. But, as I haven’t actually experienced it, I haven’t had the feels. What it felt like at that time. Yes, it is individual and so two people in the same position won’t necessarily feel the same, but the unique combination of life to that point along with temperament and other contextual factors, will lead to the feel of the experience. I’m convinced that having people with lived experience guiding and directing projects makes those projects better. One of our peer mentors talked about knowing what it feels like to experience homelessness and so I want to listen more to him. I still won’t have felt what it feels like, but I’ll be listening to him guiding out next steps at work.
