Collaboration Magic

I love working in Teams. Bringing together a range of people who can share different perspectives and skills, and build something better than if we all worked alone. I particularly love hearing from previously unheard voices. This is where the magic lies. I’ve met quite a few people over the years who have a wealth of experience or insight but for whatever reason, don’t often get the chance to speak – or people aren’t willing to hear them if they do. I find this happens a lot with young people. Young, being a relative term, which seems to increase with age along with the listener. What we think is young when we’re 25, is very different from what we think is young when we’re 55. It’s easy to write off the young as inexperienced, or lacking wisdom. And in some cases, yes, that comes with fewer years on earth. But in other ways, young people are more experienced and wiser when it comes to matters that they are close to and that affect them. Young people usually lack cynicism, they understand new and fast moving trends, they are experiencing life from their unique point of view. So, when we, as adults, are discussing issues that affect young people, we need to include them, understand how things are for them and from their perspective. We need to listen. And slow down our listening. Listen to understand – rather than listen to reply. Then we can collaborate with magic.
